The Art of Seduction

Gil Elvgren at work

Pinup girl art is something I am starting to collect. If I had to pick an artist that appeals to me the most I would have to say Gil Evgren. Some people might think this sort of art is a little too risky or inappropriate. I respect that. But with art it is all in the eye of the beholder. To me this is a huge example of Americana and a beautiful one at that. I love how the images are tasteful and not smutty in any way. There is a sort of innocence to the women depicted. I also love the era they are portrayed in. Pinup art started sometime in the 1930 and grew in popularity. There has been a resurgence in interest in this art because it is so timeless. This picture shows his models posing for his art. It is great to see his inspiration.

The process

Here are a few examples of Gil’s work.

  1. Ok – you had me at “Pin-Up”. I am SO IN LOVE with the pinup style. The clothing style suits me and I try to copy it with a 2011 bent in most of my styles. I also work on the make-up look and the head scarf look. You can see an example here….. http://gdo-family.blogspot.com/2011/07/friday-night-we-can-do-it.html.

I LOVE Rosie the Riveter from that era, as well. I, too, collect pinup art but don’t have a place to use it right now (I am full time in a VERY small space.) I can’t wait to see what you and Mel start collecting!!!

    Have a great day!

  2. Oh I ADORE pinup art – it is so sexy/classy. But pretty risque in it’s time – some are pretty naughty. But they’re just so darn adorable. I collected so many online when I was setting up our website. Our logo is one of my favorites. I wish I had the real ones! Thanks for showcasing these Shane. Keep us posted on any new ones you get so we can drool! Sherry….adorable picture of you! We have a couple of “retro” girls that keep an eye out at our spaces because we generally like to keep vintage slips & bras when we can find them. The gals are so cute! They remind me of Betty Page (now THERE’S a naughty girl for ya! Whew! ;- )
