Roller Derby has been around sine the 1920's

Roller derby was a huge draw for a lot of people and was even televised at one point. It’s still popular but has lost its hold on the main stream. It use to be played by both men and women but now is predominately played by women. Roller derby originally came from endurance skating. Throngs of fans attend live games in the 1950s. The traveling Derby troupes canvassed America, renting arena’s, Armories and outdoor stadiums. A single live bout brought in 20 thousand middle class followers and more. Mickey Rooney and Marilyn Monroe made a derby movie titled the Fireball. Live TV over-saturated the sport dwindling it’s popularity. Here is an old clip showing this brutal sport.
