Orgins of “13 Women”

This has to be one of my favorite songs by Bill Haley. If you listen to the lyrics it is kind of an odd song but really cool. Basically chronicles the dream of a guy who is the only male survivor after the bomb is dropped and there are 13 women left, I think the odds are in his favor. I listen to this song often. If I knew how to swing dance this would be the song I would dance to. Here is the song in its entirety.

This song attempts to make light of the specter of nuclear destruction. It appears to have been written in the wake of the explosion of the first hydrogen bomb, at Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954, less than 10 years after the twin horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

  1. Ann-Margret had a version of this only it was called “13 Men” sometime in the 60s. I’m sure there are other versions by other female artists, but I like A-M’s version. 🙂
