Liquidation of Carlo of Hollywood Collection

Liquidation of Carlo of Hollywood Collection

Hello all,

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is “are you selling any Carlos”? The answer is finally a big YES!!!

As many of you may know, we have been collecting Carlo of Hollywood for well over a decade and have amassed a very large collection (around 70 pieces). Our current collection consists of ALL original watercolors by Carlo, no prints across all genres such jungle cats, nudes, tropical, asian, western etc. just to name a few. All the ones in our collection are still vibrant in color. Now that we have arrived in Texas we are going in a different direction with our decor. This means most of our collection will be put up for sale in the next few months. This isn’t going to be a bargain basement sale and we are not desperate or in a rush to sell. As many of you collectors know, these watercolors seem to be climbing in value. More to come so keep an eye out! If you’re curious about what Carlos could be up for sale please search for “Carlo” on in Keyword Search on our blog. Even so, that only covers a fraction of our collection.

Items we may consider as trades are as follows:

-Frederic Weinberg

-Steelcase floating furniture

-Chromecraft

-Eero Aarnio

-Kartell

-Eames

-Knoll

-Broyhill Chapter One

-Adrian Pearsall

-Joe Colombo

-Modeline

We are open to any high end space age and MCM pieces. Feel free to send us photos of anything you have that you think might be of equal trade. We are not looking for projects, so please don’t send items that require a complete restoration.

Below is a small sample of our collection.

2017: Year in Review

2017: Year in Review

This past year was about turning the page. If you’ve followed our blog, you’re aware that we recently moved. This was a MAJOR move for us. What some of you may not know is that we had a house in Sacramento and an apartment in San Jose that Mel lived in during the week for work. This move included moving out of both homes, moving out of Midway, selling a house, and buying a house. All of this happened in less than 4 months. For our year in review, we’d like to focus on key events related to our move and cover some of the fun stuff we were able to squeeze in.

Sold 1959 Ranch

People would often say to us that they would hate to be us if we ever moved. Mel and I have been collectors our whole marriage (13 years this coming Feb) and we’ve amassed quite a collection of vintage home decor. To be honest, we probably would have moved sooner if the idea of moving wasn’t so daunting. We began packing in mid-July, and the house hit the market on August 20, 2017. The house went pending a week later on the first day of our open house. We accepted a contingency offer over asking, and the house closed on October 3, 2017.

Here are a few shots before and after we packed the rooms up.

Closed our Showroom

Once we started packing, the next thing we did was begin liquidating our inventory in our showroom at Midway Antique Mall. We became dealers at Midway in August of 2013. Coincidentally, we closed our showroom almost exactly 4 years later this past August, 2017. Here are some photos of how our showroom evolved over the years.

Moved out of San Jose Pad

In our San Jose pad, we were able to decorate outside our usual atomic fifties style. This was a fun change. Luckily, we were able to keep a lot of this collection. We’re creating a music listening room in one of the bedrooms in our new house, and we’re decorating with a lot of these pieces. Below are some photos of our pad before we moved out.

Photo Shoots

We squeezed in a few photo shoots before we started moving. Our house in Sacramento was decorated in fifties atomic and tiki, while our San Jose apartment was decorated in a more space age, mod style. Below are some photos from shoots that occurred at both locations.

Collection

Even with all the chaos and stress of moving, we had some time to add to our collection and knock out a few restorations.

We added one final piece today to our collection for 2017. Thanks to Christina and Chris Lindquist for thinking of us when they decided to re-home this amazing Frederic Weinberg piece.

Name Change

When we started our blog about 6 years ago, our focus was on sharing our mid-century home decor collection and restoration techniques. Over the years, we’ve evolved and become more diverse in our collection and we decided to no longer offer restoration services to the public (we’ll still blog about pieces we restore for our collection). Because of this, Hepcat Restorations no longer represented who we were. So, we rebranded ourselves as Hepcats Haven.

Hepcats Haven Designs

I’ve always thought of myself as an artistic person. As a kid, I used to spend endless hours drawing. I decided to embark on a new adventure and try my hand at graphic design. My portfolio isn’t very large yet, but I plan to build this up. You’ll find a variety of designs in my collection including fifties atomic, tiki, seasonal, Panton era, etc..

Currently, I’m using the Redbubble and Spoonflower platforms to showcase my collection. You’ll be able to buy the images I design and have them printed on clothing, books, and home decor such pillows, bedding & clocks. You can purchase my designs on fabric, wallpaper, and gift wrap via Spoonflower. Click on the links below to check out my designs.

Here are some examples:

Our New 1961 Ranch

Special thanks to James Safonov Realty and Brad L’Engle of Guild Mortgage. James actually sold our house in Sacramento and helped us with buying our new home. He drove from Sacramento all the way to the Bay Area every time we had homes we wanted to check out.

We found our new Hepcats Haven in early November. This is what we’re starting with. We’re putting our touches on it, and will show you some after photos once we get our landscaping more dialed in.

What’s Next?

We’re focusing on getting our new house in order. Getting unpacked and our collection up has actually been more difficult than the move itself. As we get rooms in order, we’ll be sure to share our journey with you. Here’s a sneak peek…

We wish a happy New Year to everyone!

Rare Large Tiger Carlo of Hollywood Watercolor

JCC

One of the great things about having this blog is that it is a great way to connect with folks who are trying to sell items we collect. In this instance a gentleman from Redding California reached out to us and asked if we would be interested in a jungle cat Carlo.

IMG_4165

As you might guess, we are always interested in jungle cat Carlos. This Carlo makes a complete 3 piece set as they were originally sold. We already had the two smaller ones on the right.

IMG_4160

Excuse the reflections

IMG_4168

IMG_4169

This Carlo is the largest in our collection now. We used to own a ballerina Carlo that must have been over 5ft wide but we sold it.

IMG_4172

IMG_4173

With the black background it really makes the greens and oranges jump out!

Underwater Carlo Trio Complete

IMG_3707

This is the one we picked up last week and we love it!

IMG_6633

These two smaller ones arrived today. We picked them up off of Ebay.

IMG_6634

The frames need a little work but this trio will look fantastic together.

Rare Underwater Carlo Of Hollywood

IMG_3707

Mel and I have been so busy as of late.  We had our store launch on Saturday and we shot down to Alameda on Sunday for a full day of shopping.  Once we arrived home I decided to hop on Craigslist to see what was on there and I came across this Carlo.

IMG_3711

We hopped back in the car and drove back to the Bay the same day.  We have been hunting for an underwater Carlo for the longest time.

IMG_3710

It appears to be a Hawaiian piece.  I believe the large black fish is a shark.

IMG_3709

We have a line on a set of smaller fish Carlo’s that we plan to get to flank this large one.  We are soo excited!

IMG_3707

Some items we recently acquired…

IMG_2625

This is the “Electro-Match” made by Korex. This is such an atomic piece and looks great on the coffee table.

Mel and I have been soo busy keeping our booths stocked at Midway Antique Mall.  I thought I would post some pics of some cool items we picked up recently.

IMG_2627

The great thing is that this actually works!  Usually they don’t work, but we lucked out.

IMG_2628

You might recognize these.  They are Cosmo De Salvo and are beautiful.  We found these at the Second Sunday Antique F air.  The frames need some oil and that is it.

I already have these, but will sell my old set and replace them with these.  I never noticed it before, but these were painted a couple of years apart.  The top one was painted in 1947 and the other was painted in 1943.

IMG_2629

IMG_2615

These are desert Bunnell’s and I love them!  Desert art isn’t very common from that era.  We have two of his other desert scenes already.

IMG_2577

We acquired this rather large comedy and tragedy wall plaque from our friend Stephen and love them.  These will look great above one of our vintage televisions.  If you want to check out a really cool shop on eBay check out Stephen’s shop (halcyonline).

IMG_2604

This restaurant menu was too cool to pass up.  I love the imagery.  It is soo cool to see the prices.  I am assuming this is from sometime in the 40’s.

IMG_2606

IMG_2602

We also picked up a couple more Carlos to add to our collection.   This is a cool bullfighter that will look great in our bedroom.

IMG_2630

We ended up buying two of these. It looks like Cuban bongos with a dancer.

IMG_2633

This is a cool jungle cat lamp. There is no makers mark on it but I love it. To me it looks like a Carlo painting.

IMG_2600

This is a Continental Art Company lamp of a dancer holding bananas. I have the original shade. It needs to be cleaned and needs a few touch ups.

A Closer Look

Hello all,

Now that we have our new Carlos home we are able to take better pictures of them. We are very happy with these and look forward to trying to find a place to put them all.

IMG_1880

This is the largest Carlo panther I have ever seen at 52 inches wide and 33.5 inches tall.

Mark and Ann purchased these from a Carlo collector in Fresno that was liquidating his collection. They really scored finding a collector who was willing to sell his whole collection. We are soo grateful they thought of us when they got these and gave us first shot at them! As Mark always says, “these are investment pieces”. At this point, I think it is more of an addiction!!! This puts us up to 92 Carlos! Mel and I are going to have to throw a party when we hit 100!

IMG_1895

This is another monster about the same size as the one above. The colors of this one are breathtaking and there is a lot of detail. I like the dragon detail on the big flower vase. Mel likes the little dog.

IMG_1896

The background makes this piece really stand out.

IMG_1897

IMG_1898

Bengal Tiger……what else can I really add?

IMG_1899

The black background makes these just POP!!

IMG_1900

These seem to be flawless.

IMG_1903

These are going to flank the large panther and will look killer with the red frame against these acid green frames.

IMG_1904

So simple but soo cool.

Mel and I spent all last weekend getting all our art in place in the Tiki room. With these new additions it seems we have to start all over again. With wall real estate at a premium, it is getting more and more difficult to find a new home for the Carlos we come across. Now off to the Carlo gallery to update it with these.

Another Carlo Stash Raided

IMG_5299

This is an original tag that would have been on a Carlo of Hollywood piece. This is the rarest of the rare. Most of these tags were discarded. Mark is going to include this in our purchase.

Mark and Ann, the owners of Midway Antique Mall, called us today to tell us they got in 21 new Carlos!!! WHAT, 21!!! We almost swallowed our tongues. We immediately shot over to survey the collection. Mel and I picked out what we wanted but there are still pieces available for any of you collectors out there. Here are the ones we picked out (excuse the reflections).

IMG_5290

Don’t know what this picture reflects but it seems like something that relates to breaking the chains of bondage.

IMG_5293

This is an Asian man meditating while his tea steeps.

IMG_5286

Mel and I have some Thai dancers that will look fantastic with these. (Thai 1 & Thai 2)

IMG_5287

We have never seen these before. They seem to be Thai as well.

IMG_5279

These are small Carlos but are very cool. The frames are to die for. (sorry about the glare)

IMG_5278

This is a large Asian. The colors are FANTASTIC!!!

IMG_5276

Ok, Mel and I have seen a lot of cats by Carlo, but NEVER a Bengal tiger. This is super rare!

IMG_5292

This is a HUGE panther Carlo. The colors are fantastic and it is soo cool.

Carlopalooza! (Major Carlo of Hollywood Score)

IMG_1807

We have not found a large stash like this for a long time! I couldn’t stop smiling for like 8 hours!

Mel and I went to Midway Antique Mall a week ago to initially stock our new booth and when we came through the doors we noticed a set of Carlo of Hollywood paintings that were new to the store. Mel and I were soo excited when we saw this set that we scanned the rest of the store and we found eight more Carlo’s that we did not have in our collection! We told Mark and Ann, the owners of Midway, that we wanted them. We picked them up today. Happy Day!!!

IMG_1813

It is hard to find a complete trio. This is our sixth set of trios!

This trio is very cool. The colors are still so vibrant and the imagery is timeless as usual. I love the Polynesian guy in the canoe! It always amazes me how Carlo did so much with his art when it is so simple. These will look great in the……….TIKI ROOM!

IMG_1819

I just love her outfit! The pink edges of the art make it pop!

IMG_1820

Not sure where these will go. They might look good in the Tiki room as well.

IMG_1822

IMG_1821

Of course these will be in our Tiki room.

IMG_1824

I have wanted this set for a long time.

IMG_1825

What amazes me about all these Carlo’s is how vibrant the colors still are.

IMG_1823

Panthers are always cool! This one needs a little touch up on the black but it looks really cool as it is.This one does not have the forced perspective frame that all the others have.

Mel and I were just saying the other day that there has been a drought when it comes to new Carlo’s to buy. I guess this was like a torrential down pour of good luck! The good thing is that we might have a line on six more Carlo’s. Now the hard work begins, where can we fit 10 more into our 80+ Carlo collection. We are almost at a 100 Carlo’s!

Tiki Room Is Done………For Now

IMG_1785

These cushions look great after being reupholstered by Bill at B&T Upholstery.

After a lot of work and searching for the right items the Tiki room is done. The last thing needing to be done to complete the bar was to reassemble the she stools.

IMG_1773

These really glow now! It is amazing what some new polyurethane can do.

Once the stools were done we shot over to pick up some cool bamboo shelves that will hold the collection of tiki mugs we plan to collect.

IMG_1783

These frame our Coaxial television perfectly.

With this new bar and shelves the room looks a lot more put together. It takes time to get things right but in the end it pays off when you see what all your hard work and searching is able to achieve. Here are some pictures of our room. The pictures tell you more then I can write. I hope you approve!

IMG_5103

After all was done I collapsed on the 6 band and watched a true classic The Maltese Falcon. If you have never watched a classic movie on a classic television you haven’t lived. Its like being in a time warp!

Mel and I just purchased about 10 more Carlos that we will be featuring them soon and a few of them will make it into the Tiki Room. We are soo excited to get them.
