2017: Year in Review

2017: Year in Review

This past year was about turning the page. If you’ve followed our blog, you’re aware that we recently moved. This was a MAJOR move for us. What some of you may not know is that we had a house in Sacramento and an apartment in San Jose that Mel lived in during the week for work. This move included moving out of both homes, moving out of Midway, selling a house, and buying a house. All of this happened in less than 4 months. For our year in review, we’d like to focus on key events related to our move and cover some of the fun stuff we were able to squeeze in.

Sold 1959 Ranch

People would often say to us that they would hate to be us if we ever moved. Mel and I have been collectors our whole marriage (13 years this coming Feb) and we’ve amassed quite a collection of vintage home decor. To be honest, we probably would have moved sooner if the idea of moving wasn’t so daunting. We began packing in mid-July, and the house hit the market on August 20, 2017. The house went pending a week later on the first day of our open house. We accepted a contingency offer over asking, and the house closed on October 3, 2017.

Here are a few shots before and after we packed the rooms up.

Closed our Showroom

Once we started packing, the next thing we did was begin liquidating our inventory in our showroom at Midway Antique Mall. We became dealers at Midway in August of 2013. Coincidentally, we closed our showroom almost exactly 4 years later this past August, 2017. Here are some photos of how our showroom evolved over the years.

Moved out of San Jose Pad

In our San Jose pad, we were able to decorate outside our usual atomic fifties style. This was a fun change. Luckily, we were able to keep a lot of this collection. We’re creating a music listening room in one of the bedrooms in our new house, and we’re decorating with a lot of these pieces. Below are some photos of our pad before we moved out.

Photo Shoots

We squeezed in a few photo shoots before we started moving. Our house in Sacramento was decorated in fifties atomic and tiki, while our San Jose apartment was decorated in a more space age, mod style. Below are some photos from shoots that occurred at both locations.

Collection

Even with all the chaos and stress of moving, we had some time to add to our collection and knock out a few restorations.

We added one final piece today to our collection for 2017. Thanks to Christina and Chris Lindquist for thinking of us when they decided to re-home this amazing Frederic Weinberg piece.

Name Change

When we started our blog about 6 years ago, our focus was on sharing our mid-century home decor collection and restoration techniques. Over the years, we’ve evolved and become more diverse in our collection and we decided to no longer offer restoration services to the public (we’ll still blog about pieces we restore for our collection). Because of this, Hepcat Restorations no longer represented who we were. So, we rebranded ourselves as Hepcats Haven.

Hepcats Haven Designs

I’ve always thought of myself as an artistic person. As a kid, I used to spend endless hours drawing. I decided to embark on a new adventure and try my hand at graphic design. My portfolio isn’t very large yet, but I plan to build this up. You’ll find a variety of designs in my collection including fifties atomic, tiki, seasonal, Panton era, etc..

Currently, I’m using the Redbubble and Spoonflower platforms to showcase my collection. You’ll be able to buy the images I design and have them printed on clothing, books, and home decor such pillows, bedding & clocks. You can purchase my designs on fabric, wallpaper, and gift wrap via Spoonflower. Click on the links below to check out my designs.

Our New 1961 Ranch

Special thanks to James Safonov Realty and Brad L’Engle of Guild Mortgage. James actually sold our house in Sacramento and helped us with buying our new home. He drove from Sacramento all the way to the Bay Area every time we had homes we wanted to check out.

We found our new Hepcats Haven in early November. This is what we’re starting with. We’re putting our touches on it, and will show you some after photos once we get our landscaping more dialed in.

What’s Next?

We’re focusing on getting our new house in order. Getting unpacked and our collection up has actually been more difficult than the move itself. As we get rooms in order, we’ll be sure to share our journey with you. Here’s a sneak peek…

We wish a happy New Year to everyone!

1920’s Frantz Industries Aero Art Vanity

IMG_8703.jpg

Today was another Second Sunday Sacramento Antique Faire. We were up early and started our quest for something unique. As we searched, we came across this adorable art deco vanity in a booth belonging to a gentleman named Hap. This isn’t usually the era that we focus on, but it’s too cool not to blog about.

IMG_8698.jpg

Hap informed us that this was his mother Lila’s vanity. She used it in her first beauty salon in Wisconsin named “Lila’s Salon”. The salon was started in the 1920’s and it moved from Wisconsin, then to Oakland, California and finally settled in Willows, California.

IMG_8696.jpg

Considering the age of the set, I am surprised that there isn’t  more rust on the chrome. It shows that Lila lovingly took care of this set.

IMG_8701.jpg

This vanity set is complete right down to the foot stool.

IMG_8693

The vanity desk has one large drawer and on the right side it has a sterilizer cubby with the sterilizer decal.

IMG_8694

The mirror appears to be original and is heavy. Imagine the countless ladies who looked into this mirror after getting their hair styled. A lot of life happened in front of this mirror.

IMG_8699I plan to clean this set up and put it in our booth at Midway Antique Mall. I hope someone will enjoy it and cares for it as well as Hap’s mother did.

Amazing Mid Century Couch and Chair Set

IMG_6707

Mel and I were driving home from a visit to our shop inside Midway Antique Mall. On the way home we glanced over on a side street and saw a mid century couch and chair set. We rapidly swung a U turn and drove back to the house that had them out front. We jumped out and could not believe how large the couch was. The colors were still vibrant on all the pieces and the upholstery had the really cool design, as you can see.

IMG_6711

While we were drooling over them the owner came out and said they were his mothers. She was the original owner and they were purchased while her husband was in the Air Force stationed at Travis AFB. When he died she moved into a trailer park and had it with her till her passing. You could see they were triggers for his memories of her and the years they were with her.

IMG_6709

Usually, when we place something in our shop, we like to stage it but the couch is so large we had to just place them in the room.

IMG_6708

Unfortunately, there are only material tags on these pieces. We could not find a designers/makers name.

If you are in the market for an ultra cool living room set, you can check it this out in our showroom Midway Antique Mall.

Vintage Tiki Bar In The Rough

rough

Mel and I drove to a small town outside Chico to pick up a Tiki bar we found on Craigslist.

IMG_6898

This Tiki bar was not in as good of condition as we thought it would be. All that means is I have to restore it. We plan to put this in the shop because Tiki stuff seems to be doing really well right now.

IMG_6899

This bar looks fantastic from 20ft away but upon closer examination you can see that it will need some freshening up.

IMG_6904

All the bamboo will need to be sanded and an application of Ipswich Pine stain will be applied. Once dry I will polyurethane everything to seal it from the elements.

IMG_6903

The feet of this bar were made of compressed particle board. As you can see, they are rotten from water soaking into them. I purchased a 2 x 6 x 10 piece of lumber to replace all three of the rotted feet.

IMG_6901

The Formica on top has a crack. I am going to use some creative license on the repair of the top. You will see what I am planning once I complete the bar.

IMG_6902

This bar has a built-in cutting board, drawer and towel bar. As you can see, it has a lot of area for storage. This area will be refinished as well.

IMG_6900

Of course the chairs will need to be refinished but the cushions are fine. They appear to have been redone recently.

IMG_6897

I will be getting to work on this soon. It shouldn’t take long. Once restored, I am positive someone will want this in their home to enjoy for years to come.

Retro Bar Refresh

IMG_6797

Mel and I purchased this from one of our friends a while back. I thought the design of the bar top was really unique.

IMG_6798

I wasn’t impressed with the color and style but I knew I could freshen it up.

IMG_6739

I decided to give this bar a more 50’s feel. The sides of the cabinet had cuts in the material so I decided to accent the sides with pink (the camera isn’t catching the real color of the pink). I attached it with upholstery nails.

IMG_6741

The front was plain so I decided to use some of the scrap material I had laying around and attach diamonds to the front of it. I hot glued them in place and then nailed them to ensure their attachment.

IMG_3996

I had to paint the frame black and I repainted the foot bar in a brass color.

IMG_4071

The original stools were shot. The fabric was split and stuffing was hanging out.

IMG_3994

I repainted the stools and had the cushions redone by Fine Line Trim & Upholstery to match the bar.

IMG_4003

All done!

IMG_4006

We are very happy with the results. It makes it hard to sell but Mel and I have like 3 bars and we don’t even drink! I guess that can be a resolution for next year.

If you are interested in seeing it check out our store at Midway Antique Mall in Sacramento, California.

Stellar Electronics To The Rescue Again!

IMG_6775

Yup, that’s I Love Lucy playing on the old Predicta.

Let me explain to you what a cool cat Justin Rubsam is from Stellar Electronics in Midway Mall.  Mel and I were busy hosting our Memorial Day weekend sale when Justin came in and hooked up a VCR to our 1957 “barber pole” Philco Predicta.  When Justin noticed it wasn’t performing correctly he took it upon himself to troubleshoot the issues and get it playing correctly.  It is amazing to see Justin work because he is meticulous and so knowledgeable.  He is such an asset to Midway Mall and definitely someone to consider when looking for repair of vintage electronics.

Thanks so much Justin!
