More Vintage Tiki Frames Made Cool!!!

IMG_4978

What better art to put in a Tiki room than a Tiki Mask and cool shrunken heads!

Mel & I had a couple of cool tiki frames lying around that had no art work in them. I decided that since I still have a lot of wall space to fill I would knock out some quick Tiki art to put up. These frames have a bamboo piece on the top and bottom that holds the glass and art in place. Here is a picture of the back of the frames…

Very simply made

I like to sketch the image out with pencil first and then outline in watercolor.

After a couple of days work here is what came of it.

This one was cool, I loved painting the wood grain on this piece.

These will be a great addition to our Tiki room and will and some cool imagery.

Vintage Hula Girl Bamboo Curtain

IMG_4895

This is how it looks outside the Tiki Room.

Mel and I saw this on Craigslist in Sacramento and thought it would help make the Tiki Room more secluded by separating it from our living room.

The woman Mel and I purchased this from worked in the Hawaiian travel industry and she said this was made specifically for one of the local hotels. When the hotel was renovated they acquired it. She said it is unique since it was produced just for the hotel. This thing is like 9 ft tall and almost 5 feet wide. This is a great addition to the room and really gives it a tropical feel.

Another Shirrell Graves

IMG_4998

You might remember a couple of months back we purchased a fantastic yellow Macaw painted by Shirrell Graves. It had a broken piece of glass and the mat was stained and ugly. I took it to Tim & Ann at Wholesale Art & Framing to replace the glass with UV preservation glass and to install a new mat. After a day or so it was done and here is how it looks:

The mat is an olive color with a black core.

Then about a week ago I was cruising Craigslist and saw that Roseville Antique Trove had a dealer that was selling a Shirrell Graves red macaw! I jumped off the couch, grabbed Mel and we shot over to acquire this fantastic piece. Mel and I were afraid it could be a print but upon further examination it is an original. It was apparent that it had been hung in direct sunlight because the once vibrant red had faded to almost a tan/pink. If you look at the bottom where the tail is you can see how red this use to be.

This is why you need to put any watercolor you love in preservation glass, it blocks 98% of UV rays.

On a side note, when I took the red Macaw out of the frame I noticed on the cardboard backing this fantastic little image:

This really helps to date the piece.

I plan to hang these in our bathroom (away from any kind of steam). We seem to be going for a tropical fish and bird theme in there at this point.

Here it is after a quick restore of the watercolor and Tim re-framing it.The red now pops and really helps bring this bird back to life.

These will look fantastic hanging next to each other and with the protective glass I will not have to worry about them fading anytime soon.

Ultra Cool Table & Chairs

IMG_1752

Mel and I came across this set when antiquing up in Chico. We thought we could use it in place of our diner booth but after a long debate we have decided to sell it and keep the booth. It is soo depressing when you find something you love but then have to turn around and unload it because you have no space for it…..sigh.

IMG_1759

Who ever gets this set will be soo lucky. The Formica on it is in fantastic condition and if someone decides to re-upholster the cushions it will POP!

IMG_1755

Couldn’t you see Dean Martin and the pack eating breakfast around this table rehashing the events from the night before?! Man this thing just oozes cool. We have it for sale in Sacramento on Craigslist, sorry not willing to ship. I hope one of our local readers scores this set.

Telefunken Sonata 5183 WK

IMG_1680

Hey all,

I was sitting around and remembered that I had not blogged about this great little 1960’s German unit. I found this on Craigslist sometime back for about $60. It was a part of a cluster of items a younger man was selling that were part of his late mothers estate. I was surprised to see everything worked when he turned it on. As usual it had that really rich and deep sound. I couldn’t get the $60 out of my pocket fast enough.

IMG_1681

The great thing about these units is that they are small but still give the rich sound like the larger units. Also, one person can move them. The sound of these units can get even better if you buy a pair of satellite speakers to play through. I have a pair sitting around that need to be restored so I guess I should get on that.

Here are a couple of photos of my grandparents. The picture of my grandma Troxel is of her in England sometime around WWII. The picture of my grandpa Troxel is soo cool, he looks like a gangster or something. The frames are really cool. I plan to blog about Art Deco frames, there are soo many cool ones out there.

This unit can play all the variety of speeds (16, 33 & 45) including 78! I have a mess of 78’s including about 15 binders like the one below full of one of my favorite crooners Bing Crosby. I must have every song he sang or even hummed.

IMG_1690

Since I am on the subject of 78’s let me take just a moment to express to you what a lost piece of treasure these records are. I have seen people throw these records away because they are not in demand anymore. These records are also brittle and can break with very little effort. This is why they need to be appreciated and in some instances there are some really rare recordings on these records. I love sitting around listening to records that range from early Perry Como to country western. Do yourself a favor, get a player that can play 78’s and just kick back and let the music wash over you (stepping down from soap box).

Check out all these cats listening to 78’s! How can all these guys be wrong!? On a side note, this would be a cool way to sample your music, why don’t they do this anymore?

So, if you get a chance to pick one of these units up I would say go for it, especially if space is an issue.
