Mid Century TECHFAB Fiberglass Seating

As I always do, I was surfing Craigslist in surrounding areas and came across this set down in Fresno. Once I was able to coordinate a showing I hopped in the truck and shot down! These were being sold by a gentleman down in Fresno who had a warehouse full of stuff. He said that he buys a lot of items from estate sales.

My plans are to light sand these and then repaint them. These will be great as additional seating in our backyard.

Each section has five chairs. They’re mounted on really sturdy and heavy metal frames. It would take quite an effort to tip one of these over.

The cool thing is that both pieces still have the original manufactures tag on it. I’m assuming that these were made sometime in the 1960s. The gentleman I purchased them from didn’t really know much about them.

Once these are refinished, I think they will look really good in our side yard where we plan to put a horse shoe pit or bocce ball game area. It seems like anymore you have to go the distance to find the cool things.

Vintage Chromcraft Upholstery Almost Done!!!

IMG_6908

Though the upholstery does not look too bad here, it had numerous wear spots and stains.

We blogged about a really stellar Chromcraft set on our other blog Hepcat Restorations a while back. Our upholsterer Bill from B&T Upholstery sent us a few text photos of how the Chromcraft set is turning out, so I thought we would pass them along…

Mel and I spent a lot of time looking for what we felt was the right fabric and this is what we found.

Here you can see John recovering the cushion base for the couch. Both John and Bill are perfectionists.

John seen here verifying it turned out all right.

One of the concerns Bill had was that our upholstery fabric did not have enough stretch for the corners of the back rest. He ended up having to sew in inserts to make the bend, but with the busyness of the fabric pattern it blends well.

Here is the last photo showing the cushions that still need to be recovered. We hope to have the set soon and will post a follow up as soon as we do.

1970’s Original Lee West Alpha Chamber “Egg Chair” made for Krypton Furniture

lee

As many of our fellow dealers/collectors know, cool stuff is getting harder & harder to find. This is largely due to competition and the difficulty to find items in good condition. I was doing what I usually do, cruising Craigslist when I came across something that made me jump out of my seat. It was a Lee West Alpha Chamber chair!

We got this chair from another dealer we know named Sam. He is a real nice guy and always seems to find great stuff. As with all items we acquire, we like to know the back story on each piece. Sam told me this was purchased and shipped to Hawaii where it was gently used for a short time and placed in storage when brought back to the mainland. It sat in storage for 20 something years!

This unit is in amazing condition. All the fiberglass is in fantastic condition, and the upholstery is also in great original condition. Of course, this isn’t just a cool chair but also a sound capsule.

IMG_7641

On both sides of the inside of the chair there are speakers under the fabric. When I was purchasing it from Sam we tested it and the sound was surprisingly good. I could just imagine putting on some Doors and staring out at some black light posters with the glow of lava lamps washing over you.

Under the chair there are connections to power the speakers. There are two fuses to prevent a surge from frying the wires. I have the original wire harness that I have to attach new ends to.

I remember seeing this chair in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. I remember a scene where Tom Hanks’ son was up in his room with a friend sitting in the chair and chilling out.

I know this will just add to the space age feel of the room. I can’t wait to see the Chromcraft set with this chair!

I guess if your stereo laid an egg this is what it would look like!

IMG_7654

It still has the original makers label under the front lip!

IMG_7648

This is the materials tag still attached.

IMG_7661

Another great thing is this chair has it’s original instructions on how to hook it up.

IMG_7662

They have seen better days but I am happy to have them. Maybe these will help someone figure out how to hook the chair up.

I can’t wait to get this hooked up and rock out!
