Bogart Marathon On TCM (Starting 8/1/2013)

hb1

I was sitting on the couch watching TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and decided to see what would be on later tonight and I noticed a string of Bogart movies scheduled to play. I don’t know about you but there has never been a better actor than Humphrey Bogart, to me he is tops! I know people throw the word icon around all the time but he is truly and icon of the silver screen. Although he continually played men with criminal pasts, Bogart created a rich and complex screen image that stood as a visual and cultural icon for the “noir” side of Hollywood: his hangdog expression, perennial five-o’clock shadow, and dangling cigarette came to signify the world-weary cynic, the staid, self-reliant individualist who was at heart a moral, even sentimental human being. Whether portraying ex-con, war hero, detective or more offbeat characters, this combination of traits ultimately gave Bogart a romantic appeal of immense proportions, an appeal that has remained powerful with subsequent generations of moviegoers while other box office star images of the golden age have faded. Though not all of his greatest films are being played there are a lot of really good ones scheduled. Here is what will be played and when:

Carlo of Hollywood Commisioned Work!?

IMG_4780

I love this Carlo because it is soo detailed.

The great thing about our blog is that many of our readers share their stories with us. One of our readers Mollie informed us she has a Carlo of Hollywood painting that was COMMISSIONED by her father for her mother, that’s right, COMMISSIONED! I was never aware that Carlo offered commissioned works. I am sure many of you are aware that Carlo is an enigma and very little is known about the artist. This additional info helps us understand the artist a little more.

As you can see the original frame is gone but who cares, I love this piece.

Here is what Mollie told me about this Carlo:

When my father had commissioned Carlo to paint this, the woman’s breasts were exposed. When my mother saw it she flatly refused to have this in her home unless some drapery was added!  Hence you see the ladies bosom has a bit of fabric discreetly covering her! This is special to me as I grew up seeing this picture in my home.  It’s a memory of my parents so I will never sell it! Regarding my dad and how he came to know Carlo. My dad owned an industrial uniform and linen company in LA and had customers in many areas of LA including restaurants, movie industry hotels, etc. Also, he and my mom loved art and design and frequented fashionable modern furniture and decor businesses. That is how I believe he met and had this picture painted.

Thanks for your response,

Mollie

The mark of quality

I want to thank Mollie for sharing with us her valuable info that would otherwise fade into the past. I wish we knew more about Carlo. As time goes by, and those who have carnal knowledge of Carlo’s history fade away, it becomes more difficult. I hope more folks out there will share what they know with the rest of us.

The stools and the bar still have their original tags.

I love that these stools have backrests. I plan to reupholster the stools in the same fabric as our 6 band rattan set. I will drop them off at B&T upholstery tomorrow.

The top of the bar has a simple black Formica that I am not too keen on. I plan to buy some vintage postcards from Hawaii and cover the top in a collage of them under glass. I think this will give the bar a really cool effect.

Once everything is refinished I will move it into our Tiki room and post pictures. We Also found a set of really cool diamond shaped tropical Carlos that will be coming in the mail soon, a 3 piece set! The room is really coming together.
