1970’s Original Lee West Alpha Chamber “Egg Chair” made for Krypton Furniture

lee

As many of our fellow dealers/collectors know, cool stuff is getting harder & harder to find. This is largely due to competition and the difficulty to find items in good condition. I was doing what I usually do, cruising Craigslist when I came across something that made me jump out of my seat. It was a Lee West Alpha Chamber chair!

We got this chair from another dealer we know named Sam. He is a real nice guy and always seems to find great stuff. As with all items we acquire, we like to know the back story on each piece. Sam told me this was purchased and shipped to Hawaii where it was gently used for a short time and placed in storage when brought back to the mainland. It sat in storage for 20 something years!

This unit is in amazing condition. All the fiberglass is in fantastic condition, and the upholstery is also in great original condition. Of course, this isn’t just a cool chair but also a sound capsule.

IMG_7641

On both sides of the inside of the chair there are speakers under the fabric. When I was purchasing it from Sam we tested it and the sound was surprisingly good. I could just imagine putting on some Doors and staring out at some black light posters with the glow of lava lamps washing over you.

Under the chair there are connections to power the speakers. There are two fuses to prevent a surge from frying the wires. I have the original wire harness that I have to attach new ends to.

IMG_7651

I remember seeing this chair in the movie Sleepless in Seattle. I remember a scene where Tom Hanks’ son was up in his room with a friend sitting in the chair and chilling out.

I know this will just add to the space age feel of the room. I can’t wait to see the Chromcraft set with this chair!

IMG_7650

I guess if your stereo laid an egg this is what it would look like!

IMG_7654

It still has the original makers label under the front lip!

IMG_7648

This is the materials tag still attached.

IMG_7661

Another great thing is this chair has it’s original instructions on how to hook it up.

IMG_7662

They have seen better days but I am happy to have them. Maybe these will help someone figure out how to hook the chair up.

IMG_7665

I can’t wait to get this hooked up and rock out!

1960’s Tango Chairs Produced By Overman AB

overman

Mel and I had the good fortune to come across these at one of our favorite haunts. We knew what they were right when we saw them. We are so excited to get a matching set of four.

IMG_7544

I love the simplicity and functionality these offer.

IMG_7541

The Overman Company began production in Sweden, before reloctating (under the same name) to Lüneburg, Germany.  In the early 1960’s, the company produced some very cool  pieces, which are very collectable and rare.

IMG_7543

These chairs have a lot going for them: they are light, when stacked can offer a small footprint and they have a unique design.

IMG_7542

Mel and I are debating if they will be added to our collection or if they will end up in our shop, we will let you know!

Here are some other fantastic pieces Overman AB produced…

This is the only vintage ad I could find of some really cool looking chairs they offered.

Our Alameda Point Antiques Faire Finds

alameda

Mel and I were up at 2:30am this morning getting ready and driving to the largest antiques show in Northern California. We love Alameda because of the size of the faire and the scenic views. You can see the heart of S.F. from almost any point around the faire.  The weather was great today, and added to the enjoyment of the day.

Here are the fruits of our labor!

IMG_7290

This Craig radio and speakers is really cool. If you look closely, you can see orange plastic behind the speakers and radio. I love the accent of that against the dark wood. We also managed to find the really cool hourglass.

IMG_7291

This super mod plastic clock and calendar was produced by Burwood. We love it’s functionality!

IMG_7292

Here we have an assortment of Murano, Blenko and other cool glass pieces.

IMG_7293

This is a real gem! This will look great with the rest of our space age decor! We love this phone.

IMG_7294

This “Janga” looking piece is a table top puzzle piece from the 70’s.

IMG_7296

These jacks are huge. They are made of resin, thank god because if they were metal I am not sure I could lift them! We purchased these courtesy of FandFVintage.

IMG_7297

Totally Panton Era mirrors! Thanks Tom and Vern!

Large vintage Kimball bullet planter

IMG_7299

Large abstract geometric lucite sculpture by Van Teal circa 1970’s.

IMG_7301

This interesting piece is also from FandFVintage and will be used as a planter.

IMG_7305

This is a vintage red pod chair. We are unable to find anything about the maker of this piece. I have a yellow chair that will go with this that I cannot substantiate either. If anybody knows the maker, we’d be interested in knowing.

Vintage Chromcraft Couch, Chair, Ottoman and Tables

saf

Mel and I were contacted by our friend Tracy at m.a.r.k vintage who let us know about an available space age couch, chair and table set. We were so excited to hear this and I shot over early the next day to get them.

IMG_6920

The couch, chair and ottoman are in good shape but I plan to recover them. The fiberglass on these pieces is thick and durable.

IMG_6917

This is the coffee table, end table and planter that came with the set.

IMG_6908

The fiberglass has the usual yellowing from being exposed to sunlight for some time.

IMG_6918

Restoring the fiberglass is simple. All I have to do is light sand all the pieces once the upholstery is removed. After I sand everything,  I’ll need to wipe it down really well to remove any particulate. I plan to use the Rust-Olum white appliance paint to restore the fiberglass. I love this paint because it is durable and finishes well.

IMG_6916

Surprisingly, there are no real issues with any of the fiberglass except the yellowing.

IMG_6906

Our intention was to fix this set up for resale…BUT…you hardly ever see pieces like this, so we’ve decided to keep it……. for now.

IMG_6911

We are thinking of doing our office in the Panton Era so these will fit right in.

IMG_6891

Here is what the set looks like new.

It appears they also made a dinning set! Beam me up Scotty!

I’ve always thought this was hilarious!
