Mid-Century China Hutch

IMG_6639

We saw this hutch on Craigslist in San Francisco & knew it would be fantastic to hold some of our Tickled Pink china overflow.

This hutch was a steal and it is so clean for how old it is.

I love this dark finish. The whole piece is formica.

This drawer would be great for storing placemats, tablecloths and napkins.

This additional storage is very welcome in our kitchen.

We purchased a good part of our Vernon’s Tickled Pink set from our friend Camila at ModPop.

She even had the original postcard

They really went over the top describing this china and its potential effect on your life. If I am reading this correctly, our lives are on the fast track to wonderful!

The only thing this hutch really needs is to have the feet resprayed to make the gold pop again!

Vintage Hutch Restoration

This piece had solid bones, but the surfaces needed to be freshened up.  I had to strip, sand and stain the whole piece.  Once the stain dried, I applied semi-gloss spray polyurethane.

We picked up this hutch a few weeks ago and I had purchased it with the intention of using it to display Mel’s Franciscan Starburst China.  I wanted to accent the piece with application of aqua colored paint on the inside of the upper cabinet.

I typically don’t support the idea of painting wood furniture, but the wood grain on the inside was shot.  In this case, I think it turned out great using an accent color of the dishes we plan to display.  I can just imagine how great the Franciscan Starburst will look against the aqua backdrop.  We even brought one of the plates with us when we got the paint to color match the aqua spot of the starburst pattern.

While I was restoring it, I took the privilege of re-upholstering the silverware drawer with a more appropriate fabric…

I used some of the Robert Kaufman remnants that I used to re-upholster the Modern Craft Furniture Mfg. Co. chairs. This really adds to the piece.

Here it is done, now got to go get the china!

Here is the Franciscan Starburst in the hutch, it looks great!

It has taken us a long time to get this collection. We really love its styling.

We are happy with this hutch and will enjoy it for years to come.
